Borussia Dortmund have reportedly rewarded teenager Jadon Sancho with a new long-term contract after the progress shown from the England youth international. The 18-year-old joined the Bundesliga outfit from Manchester City during the summer of 2017 and he thereafter had a bright debut season where he contributed five goals and seven assists across all competitions.
He said: “I’m so happy that I chose to come to Dortmund a year ago. Everything I was hoping for has come true: this city loves football like no other, and at BVB young players get regular playing time.I can really make outstanding progress here. I’m happy, delighted and proud to be part of this team. We’re building something incredible.”
Sancho could have quite easily stayed in the Premier League, had he decided to pen a professional contract with the Citizens but he decided against the option with no assurances of regular gametime in the near future. Thereafter, he was associated with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur but Dortmund eventually made the breakthrough with the Citizens after agreeing to a transfer package which could increase to up to £8m.
So far, Sancho has not managed to convince manager Lucien Favre to hand him a regular role from the starting line-up.But should he continue in the same vein of form, the Swiss will surely find it difficult to restrict the Englishman’s gametime. Meanwhile, Sancho has managed to progress through the age groups when it comes to playing for the national team and it remains to be see whether he can bag a senior call-up under Gareth Southgate.
