Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has openly criticised the players after they managed a frustrating 1-1 draw against Freiburg on the road. The Bavarian giants had done tremendously before the international break to put themselves ahead of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table but they squandered the same advantage with a stalemate at the weekend.
Bayern managed to have 27 shots on the opposition goal but out of those, only eight of them were on target. Despite this, they were widely fancied to find the scoresheet after netting 17 goals from the past three league games but that was not meant to be with Robert Lewandowski, in particular, squandering multiple chances to secure the three points.
The Bundesliga holders will not shift their attention to the DFB Pokal Cup where they are scheduled to face second-tier side Heidenheim at the quarter-final stage. They are overwhelming favourites for that encounter and Kovac would want a dominating performance before the team prepares themselves to face Dortmund at the weekend.
Dortmund secured a 3-2 comeback triumph over Bayern during the return fixture at the Signal Iduna Park and Kovac’s team need to avenge the defeat, if they are to leapfrog them to the top of the table once more with six games to play.
