Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny fancied Mesut Ozil to make the move to Fenerbahce once his career with the north London side finishes. The former Germany international struggled for regular gametime during the early phase of the campaign but he has been a regular of late and has started the last nine Premier League matches under Mikel Arteta.
Speaking in an interview in Turkey, Elneny, who is currently on a season-long loan at Besiktas, said that Ozil has a fondness for Fenerbahce and that could be his preferred destination after parting ways with the Gunners, he told: “Mesut Ozil really loves Fenerbahce, he always goes on about them. If you ask me he could move to Fenerbahce. He likes to try and wind me up by singing their songs.”
Ozil has been far from impressive since penning a new contract in January 2018 and, over the past year, he has barely benefited the team with goalscoring contributions. However, his performances have genuinely improved under the guidance of Arteta over the past few months and, of late, he bagged his first Premier League goal of the season in the 4-0 triumph over Newcastle United.
As such, the German has shown that he can offer more to the team but there continues to remain speculation, particularly with his current contract due to expire at the end of next season. Obviously, Ozil has stated that he has no plans of leaving the north London side before the conclusion of the contract and it remains to be seen whether the board are content with the same decision.
At the moment, there are no discussions between Ozil and the club over a possible new contract and it appears likely that his Gunners career will wind up over the next 16 months. Ozil could make the starting XI when the Gunners host Olympiacos during the second leg of the Europa League round of 32 clash. Arteta’s side have a 1-0 advantage from the first leg on the road.
